Combatting Financial Fraud in the Age of Deepfakes

Private Wealth Management Association (PWMA) was delighted to partner once again with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) to deliver this well-received session exploring financial fraud, cyber threats, and the growing impact of deepfake technologies.

Following strong interest in our previous session, we were pleased to welcome not only PWMA members, but also participants from our Apprenticeship Programme and the Family Office Association Hong Kong Summer Internship Programme. Bringing together experienced practitioners and future industry talent made for an especially engaging discussion on one of the most pressing challenges facing the industry today.

A big thank you to the speakers from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Police Force, who shared practical perspectives on evolving fraud risks, including investment scams, mule accounts, phishing attacks, WhatsApp hijacking, and the increasingly sophisticated use of deepfake technology.

One of the highlights of the session was a live demonstration of deepfake tools, bringing to life just how convincing these technologies have become and reinforcing the importance of vigilance, education, and collaboration across the ecosystem.

As fraud and cyber threats continue to evolve, staying informed and vigilant is more important than ever. At PWMA, we remain committed to facilitating meaningful dialogue and helping equip both current and future practitioners with the knowledge and perspectives needed to navigate an increasingly digital landscape.

It was encouraging to see such strong engagement from members, apprentices, and interns alike, reinforcing the importance of continued learning and industry-wide awareness on these issues.
